When I was first invited to go to the first annual Nebo Jam with some of the other KHDX staffers and DJ’s, I was a little hesitant to say yes. I’d had a rough week, full of midterms and essays and project deadlines, and I really just wanted to spend all of Saturday curled up in my bed watching King of the Hill with my roommate. Still, I had already said yes, and I probably needed to get away from campus for a little while anyways. So, we all piled into Anna’s car, I squeezed myself into the middle seat, and we made our way to Mount Nebo State Park. After a few wrong turns, and a stop to pick flowers on the side of the road, we made it to Nebo Jam. We settled in for a long day of music from local Arkansas artists. I hadn’t thought to look at the line up for Nebo Jam (which, admittedly would have been a good idea) so my entire day was filled with surprises. I had the opportunity to listen to incredible artists, but the best surprise of the day (for me, at least) was when I saw Arkansauce walk into the crowd. I was a little starstruck, to say the least. During my first year at Hendrix, all of my upperclassmen friends had introduced me to this bluegrass band from Fayetteville, Arkansas. I had spent the majority of my freshman year listening to Arkansauce’s music, and sometimes they would make their way down to Conway to play at Kings, a live music venue a few blocks away from Hendrix, but I somehow always missed it. This was the first time I actually got to see them live, and it was as fantastic as I could have hoped. I sang along side my fellow KHDX DJ’s as we listened to Arkansauce play all of my favorite songs. After they finished their set, we all piled back into Anna’s car (thanks for driving Anna!) and made our way back to Hendrix. I promptly fell asleep, the lyrics of Lady Luck, playing in the back of my mind still.
