Welcome to another week of Fictional Attachments, where your favorite character always has a playlist, on KHDX 93.1. Tonight’s episode will be based on one of Wes Anderson’s most loved and hated characters, Max Fischer from the 1998 film, “Rushmore”. You see that’s the true beauty of Anderson’s work.. his creation of characters that make you question the normality of situations and who exactly you are supposed to be routing for in this story. For Wes Anderson, Rushmore was his second full-length film made and Jason Schwartzman’s very first film. Jason Schwartzman played the lead of Max Fischer in Rushmore and played many other roles in later Anderson films.
As for the plot of Rushmore, it focuses on a student named Max who is incredibly intelligent and ambitious, but also at times arrogant and immature. His grades are failing but he is also the president of several clubs and claims to have saved the language of Latin. He writes a play and lies about his family history. And probably most importantly, he falls in love with one of the teachers at his school. But be fully aware that this is not a love story. This is classified as a comedy-drama, so be prepared for some internal screams and laughter directed at the wit in the film.
So for this playlist, I decided to incorporate some of the film’s soundtrack, a few songs by the lead actor’s bands Phantom Planet and Coconut Records, and a few songs that fit in nicely within the mix.
