Hey yall! Last week’s episode was centered around Sly and the Family Stone’s 1971 album There’s a Riot Goin On. We checked out some of its defining tracks and considered what makes it such a unique album in the annals of funk. The record is unique in its dark, mellow, hazy vibe which distinguishes its well-crafted funk grooves from the joyous positivity of most funk. I can’t encourage you enough to check out this album, Sly fan or no (and let’s be honest who doesn’t like a bit of Sly?). On top of this album peek we heard some funky variety from the likes of Dr. John, Zapp and Roger, and King Floyd. Tune in this week Thursday at 5 central for a light special on 80s funk, featuring the talents of the Talking Heads, Michael Jackson, Cameo, and Prince.
