In this pilot episode of “American-ish”, we introduce ourselves as three POC seniors who want to share our culture and highlight our experiences as hyphenated Americans through this show. We talk about how proud we were to see the rising Asian representation in popular media through the Marvel movie Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021) and its soundtrack featuring various Asian artists like DPR Live, NIKI, Rich Brian, and Keshi. Then, we share our experiences of growing up as a hyphenated American in Arkansas from the background of a Korean-American (myself), Filipino-American (Kaizz), and Mexican-American (Monica). Specifically, we discuss the struggles of not feeling “American enough”, or “[insert another identity] enough” in our predominantly White institutions growing up. As our finale, we introduce the “immigrant daughter experience”, which speaks to the tight bond that immigrant daughters have with their parents, the resulting guilt immigrant daughters face when moving away, and the multitude of chores and responsibilities that come with this identity. Each of the songs: “Melody”, “Not Like You”, “Burnout”, and “Just Like This” were by Korean artists and meant to complement each topic.
