Hello Everyone!
Note: unfortunately the recording system would not work with me this episode so I have no episode recording to share. Sorry! But I will share the links to the music below for yall to explore if you’re so inclined.
For this week’s episode, we looked at some songs oriented around how death is expressed in Hindu-tradition and music. Death is not something that is something “bad” or “good” in the tradition, but simply the natural order of things. One form of Lord Shiva who is the one one turns to seeking to liberate their soul upon death is Kaalabhairava. The name means “one beyond time.” Shiva himself is often closely associated with the more esoteric and supernatural aspects of reality, since he is said to be in the constant companionship of ghouls and goblins. For this episode, I chose three Carnatic songs (i.e. classical Indian music from the south) and one Hindustani song, each around Kaalabhairava. The hindustani song listed is much more transcendental, and the title translates to “you are the reason for the cosmos.”
Song 1: Kalabhairavam Bhajeham. Sung by Achintya Prahlad, composed by Muttuswami Dikshitar.
Song 2: Kalabhairavam. Sung by TM Krishna, composed by Muttuswami Dikshitar.
Song 3: Sri Vatukanatha. Sung by Sudha Rangunathan, composed by Muttuswami Dikshitar
Song 4: Jag Kartar Tu Hi. Sung by Ustad Rashid Khan
